Supporting Bright Minds
ADHD Evaluations in
Children & Adolescents
We understand that the process of seeking answers about your child’s attention and learning challenges can be daunting. Our comprehensive ADHD evaluations combine careful assessment with compassionate understanding, helping families discover effective strategies for success at school and home.
What is ADHD?
ADHD affects how children focus, organize, and regulate their emotions and behavior. While children with ADHD often possess remarkable creativity, energy, and problem-solving abilities, they may struggle with traditional learning environments. Each child experiences ADHD differently – some might have difficulty sitting still during class, while others may seem lost in their thoughts.
ADHD isn’t simply about attention challenges – it’s a complex neurodevelopmental condition that impacts many aspects of executive functioning, including organization, time management, and emotional regulation. Comprehensive ADHD testing can help identify these patterns and guide effective interventions. Many brilliant minds throughout history have had ADHD, channeling their unique way of thinking into historic achievements. With proper understanding and support, children with ADHD can harness their unique strengths and develop strategies to navigate challenges successfully.

Understanding Your Child’s ADHD Journey
ADHD presents differently in each child, affecting daily life across multiple domains, from schoolwork to social interactions. Early identification through comprehensive ADHD testing and understanding of symptoms help create targeted support strategies that build on your child’s natural strengths while addressing areas of difficulty.
Common Signs and Related Patterns of ADHD
- Focus and Task Management: Difficulty maintaining focus during required activities yet shows strong engagement in preferred tasks.
- Executive Function: Challenges with organization, memory, and following multi-step directions.
- Self-Regulation: Difficulty with impulse control and emotional regulation, especially when frustrated.
- Family Connections: ADHD often runs in families with similar traits present in siblings or parents.
- Related Conditions: Commonly co-occurs with anxiety, behavior disorders, and dyslexia.
- Gender Expression: ADHD can look different in girls, leading to underdiagnosis. Learn more about ADHD in girls.

We had such a great experience at MNNP and appreciate the detailed report. I met with my chlid’s teacher and she said it was one of the best reports she’s ever read. I just wanted to pass that on to you and let you know that all the details you included in here, we so appreciate it and it’s been amazing.
We were so impressed by the care, humanity, humor, and professionalism of the MNNP team. A sincere thank you to the team that worked with us.
Both myself and my husband were so impressed with the thorough assessment, organization, and overall experience we had with MNNP. We understand this is going to be a long journey, but feel informed and empowered. We had a meeting with the school today and I was excited to see in the draft that many of the recommendations from Dr. Adams were already listed.

Frequently Asked Questions
Below are frequently asked questions specifically about ADHD. For information about our comprehensive evaluation process and additional questions regarding assessments for school-age children and teens, please visit the FAQ section on our Evaluations for Children & Adolescents webpage.
Will the meds mask the ADHD symptoms?
ADHD is a behavioral condition that requires consideration of the whole child, including aspects of functioning at home, school, and social settings. The ADHD testing that we do contributes to that but is not the only variable that is considered. It’s important for the child to be able to engage in testing, and we want to get a sense of what their current daily functioning is. Meds would not mask or hide ADHD in our evaluation process because we take a comprehensive approach.
Should my child take their medication that morning?
Yes, we recommend your child take their medications as usual on the morning of their evaluation.
What is the benefit of having a formal ADHD diagnosis?
A formal ADHD diagnosis provides several important benefits:
- Understanding the root cause: You’ll gain clarity about the specific underlying mechanics of your child’s attention, focus, and behavioral challenges and how ADHD affects their learning and daily functioning. A diagnosis helps demystify ADHD-related struggles and reduce frustration.
- Accessing school accommodations: A formal diagnosis may qualify your child for educational supports, accommodations, and services through Section 504 or Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
- Starting targeted intervention: With a clear diagnosis, you can begin ADHD interventions tailored to your child’s needs, including therapy, coaching, tutoring, medication management, or other evidence-based treatments recommended by your neuropsychologist.
How does ADHD affect the brain?
ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition caused by differences in the development of specific brain networks responsible for executive functioning, attention regulation, and impulse control. Neuroimaging studies reveal differences in brain structure, connectivity, and neurotransmitter activity—particularly involving dopamine and norepinephrine pathways. ADHD is a complex condition, and the specific brain differences and their impact can vary significantly from person to person. ADHD can also present differently in women and girls, which has led to historical underdiagnosis in these populations (learn more about ADHD in girls).
Many individuals with ADHD also experience periods of intense focus on preferred activities, a phenomenon sometimes referred to as “hyperfocus.” While this intense concentration can be a strength, it may also present challenges if it leads to neglecting other responsibilities. Individuals with ADHD may also demonstrate creative problem-solving abilities, high energy that can be channeled productively, and what some describe as unique strengths that emerge from these same brain differences (read our “ADHD Superpowers” for more on strengths).
rADHD often runs in families and frequently co-occurs with other conditions, including learning differences (e.g., dyslexia), anxiety, or depression. Understanding these brain-based differences and the varied ways they can manifest helps families and educators provide appropriate support and recognize individual strengths.
What are your policies regarding insurance?
