Why Guessing Hinders Reading Development

The lake days are winding down, the school supply lists are out, and backpacks are reappearing by the front door. As you get ready to send your child back to school, it’s the perfect moment to peek inside one of the most remarkable things their brain will do this year β€” learn to read.

If you’ve watched a child look at a picture, glance at the first letter, and take a guess at the word, you’ve seen a strategy that feels like reading. Brain science can show us what real reading looks like from the insideβ€”and it’s fascinating.

Your brain wasn’t born to read. πŸ“–

In the brain there’s no “reading center” wired in at birth. Instead, when a child learns to read, the brain repurposes a small patch of visual cortex β€” an area on the left side, behind your ear, that started out recognizing everyday objects and shapes. Scientists call it the visual word form area (VWFA). French neuroscientist Stanislas Dehaene, PhD and his team scanned children every couple of months during their first year of school and watched it happen in real time: letters and words gradually moved into this neighborhood of the brain and set up shop.

Think of the VWFA as your brain’s word bank. Once a word is stored there, you don’t sound it out anymore β€” you just see it and know it. Instantly. Effortlessly. That’s what fluent reading is.

So how do words get into the bank?

Here’s the part that surprises most people: there’s only one door in β€” and it’s decoding.

When a child sounds out a word β€” matching letters to sounds, left to right β€” the brain glues the spelling to the sound and the meaning, all at once. Researchers call this orthographic mapping. After a few successful sound-outs, the word is stored. Permanently. That’s how kids go from slowly sounding out ship to recognizing it in a tenth of a second.

And here’s what guessing does:

Guessing skips the letters. And if the brain doesn’t process the letters, there’s nothing to store. The child might land on the right word today β€” but the account stays empty for tomorrow. The word has to be figured out again. And again. And again. 

Guessing isn’t a shortcut. It’s a skipped deposit.

Worse, guessing from context trains exactly the habits we see in struggling readers β€” confusing words that look alike (horse and house) or mean similar things (horse and pony). Research shows that predicting words from context is not what skilled readers do.

“But good readers seem to read whole words!”

They do seem to. Dehaene calls whole-word reading an illusion. Brain imaging shows that skilled readers still process every single letter β€” they’ve just gotten so fast and automatic that it feels instant. Experts read all the letters at once; beginners read them one at a time. The goal of instruction isn’t to skip the letters. It’s to make letter-processing automatic.

Context isn’t the enemy! Using context to confirm a word you’ve already decoded, or to figure out what a new word means β€” that’s healthy reading. The problem is using context instead of the letters.

What this means for your reader ❀️

If your child is guessing at words, they’re not being lazy β€” they’re using the strategy that’s in front of them. Kids with dyslexia are especially likely to lean on guessing, because decoding is the hard part for them. That’s important to pay attention to β€” it’s often the first visible signal that a reader needs more support.

The fix is known, and it works: explicit, structured teaching of letters and sounds β€” and lots and lots of practice sounding out real words. Every sound-out grows the bank. And it’s never too late to start; the brain repurposes that reading real estate in adults, too. 

Thankfully, in 2023, The READ Act legislation passed in Minnesota and public schools have been retraining teachers and purchasing better structured literacy curriculum to improve reading instruction, based on how brains learn to read.
